Key Signs of the End Times from Jesus’ Teachings
By Brian Williams / April 22, 2025 / 1 Comment / Blog
Among all biblical teachings about the End Times, perhaps none are as influential—or as widely discussed—as those directly taught by Jesus Himself. Key signs of the End Times from Jesus’ teachings are central to this discussion.Matthew 24, often called the Olivet Discourse, is where Jesus outlines clear signs of His coming and the end of the age.
Today, as we continue our journey through the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the End of Time, we’ll take a deeper dive into these key signs Jesus identified. We’ll unpack their meaning, significance, and discuss their relevance to our lives today. Most importantly, we’ll explore how these signs encourage believers to remain watchful, hopeful, and spiritually prepared.
Check out our article here for more information on why Christians believe these are key signs of the End Times.
Setting the Stage: Jesus and the Olivet Discourse
Before examining individual signs, it’s important to understand the context in which Jesus provided these teachings.
Matthew 24 begins with Jesus leaving the Jerusalem temple when His disciples point out its impressive structures. His response stuns them:
“Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down” (Matthew 24:2).
This startling prophecy prompts the disciples to privately approach Jesus on the Mount of Olives, asking:
“Tell us…when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” (Matthew 24:3).
Jesus’ response offers the clearest description in the Gospels about the signs preceding His second coming and the end of the world as we know it. Let’s explore these signs in detail.
False Prophets and Deception
What Jesus Said:
“Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many.” (Matthew 24:4-5)
Jesus warns explicitly of widespread deception, false messiahs, and false teachings, leading many astray. Throughout history—and increasingly today—countless spiritual leaders have claimed divine authority or special insight, misleading millions.
Relevance Today:
Our age is marked by unprecedented spiritual confusion and proliferation of misleading doctrines. Numerous groups claiming exclusive truths, charismatic leaders asserting messianic status, and widespread distortions of scripture make Jesus’ warning particularly timely. Believers must remain discerning, testing all teachings against scripture.
Wes Huff has emerged as a wonderful resource in this area. His methodologies used to evaluate scripture are tools in any believers belt.
Wars and Rumors of Wars
What Jesus Said:
“You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.” (Matthew 24:6)
Global conflict is one of the earliest signs mentioned by Jesus. Wars, conflict, and political unrest have characterized every century, yet Jesus emphasizes the frequency and intensity of these conflicts will escalate.
Relevance Today:
While war is nothing new, today’s advanced weaponry, global alliances, nuclear threats, and rapidly increasing geopolitical tensions reflect Jesus’ depiction with alarming accuracy. The prophetic significance lies not in any single war, but the intensifying global climate of conflict. The world seems to be in an ongoing state of unrest that keeps believers spiritually vigilant.
Natural Disasters and Environmental Crises
What Jesus Said:
“There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.” (Matthew 24:7-8)
Natural disasters, famines, earthquakes, floods, wildfires, and pandemics all serve as early indicators of approaching fulfillment. Jesus notably refers to these events as “birth pains,” suggesting increasing frequency, intensity, and impact over time.
Relevance Today:
Environmental catastrophes, food shortages, pandemics, and record-breaking natural disasters dominate today’s headlines. Modern believers view these global crises through the lens of prophecy, not as random catastrophes, but as signs prompting spiritual awareness and preparedness.
The Crisis Group provides information around the world, in real-time, regarding various topics. We do not endorse and are not affiliated with this group. We do not know much of their founding team or what their beliefs are, but are using this citing as affirmation of the focus on such crises around the world.
Persecution of Believers
What Jesus Said:
“Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death… You will be hated by all nations because of me.” (Matthew 24:9)
Persecution has long been a reality for Christians, but Jesus emphasizes its global scale in the final days. He specifically highlights hatred “by all nations,” indicating widespread hostility toward Christianity.
Relevance Today:
Today, persecution is accelerating worldwide. Organizations monitoring religious persecution report unprecedented hostility against Christians globally. Western believers, too, face growing cultural resistance. Jesus’ words encourage believers to endure faithfully despite opposition, strengthened by the knowledge that persecution aligns precisely with prophetic expectations.
A resource for current events is with Open Doors. Open Doors exists to strengthen and equip Christians around the world who are facing persecution because of their belief in Jesus Christ.
Widespread Apostasy: Falling Away from Faith
What Jesus Said:
“At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other.” (Matthew 24:10)
Jesus explicitly predicts a significant decline in authentic faith, with widespread abandonment of biblical truths and values. Apostasy involves deliberate rejection or distortion of foundational Christian beliefs.
Relevance Today:
Church attendance, doctrinal commitment, and belief in biblical authority have sharply declined in many regions, reflecting Jesus’ warning. The rising popularity of spiritual relativism, progressive Christianity, and diluted doctrines underscores a growing spiritual crisis. This apostasy serves as a powerful reminder for believers to hold firmly to biblical truth amid increasing spiritual compromise.
Increase in Wickedness and Moral Decay
What Jesus Said:
“Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold.” (Matthew 24:12)
Moral decay and societal breakdown will characterize the days preceding Christ’s return, according to Jesus. He predicts that increasing wickedness will erode compassion, empathy, and genuine love.
Relevance Today:
Today’s headlines are filled with stories reflecting unprecedented moral crises. Violence, crime, immorality, and ethical breakdown run rampant. The pervasive cultural shift away from biblical values vividly illustrates Jesus’ description of moral decline. Believers face daily challenges to maintain Christlike love and compassion amidst this moral climate.
We discuss this in length in our book The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the End of Time.
Global Spread of the Gospel
What Jesus Said:
“And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” (Matthew 24:14)
Significantly, Jesus emphasizes global evangelism as the final indicator preceding His return. The gospel’s worldwide proclamation signals humanity’s nearing final chapter.
Relevance Today:
Technological advances have dramatically accelerated global evangelism. Satellite broadcasts, internet streaming, translation software, and missionary outreach continue to reach previously unreached populations. Many mission groups report unprecedented progress toward reaching every tribe and nation—precisely fulfilling Jesus’ prediction.
Interpreting the Signs: Wisdom and Watchfulness
Jesus concludes this teaching with cautionary wisdom:
“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.” (Matthew 24:42)
The signs Jesus outlines aren’t intended to promote fear or speculation. Rather, they serve as spiritual reminders, urging believers toward alertness, discernment, and active faithfulness. Their fulfillment encourages us to live purposefully, share the gospel courageously, and remain steadfast amidst adversity.
Jesus also cautions against date-setting or unhealthy obsession with prophecy details. Instead, these signs should motivate believers toward deeper trust in God, strengthened faith, and sincere spiritual preparedness.
Living Faithfully Today, Looking Forward with Hope
As we see many signs aligning today, Jesus’ teachings are more relevant than ever. Far from inciting anxiety, these prophetic indicators reinforce hope in Christ’s ultimate victory and promised return.
Believers today are invited to view unfolding world events not as threats, but as powerful affirmations of biblical truth, wisdom, and the eternal hope found in Christ alone. Recognizing these signs encourages spiritual growth, purposeful living, and joyful expectation of Christ’s return.
